Uncle Flip: He started Pax Brewitas.
|
Through Uncle Flip's youth, he had beer experiences in the family kitchen. It started with having little cups of it with his meals when still in the single-digit ages, and progressed to killing off the leftover beer when his dad's famous beer burgers were on the menu. Starting in his late teens, Flip discovered that there's more to the brew than fizzy yellow stuff- and started exploring different flavours, smells, and styles. (Stout and IPA and kolsch, oh my!)
A few years later, Flip had a similar experience with something quite different: travel. On his first trip overseas, he discovered there was much more out there than he'd previously known...and he wanted more. He started going to places like the Kremlin in Moscow, the crowded streets of Bangkok, the World Peace bell in Australia, and a hilltop cafe with a fabulous view at 1.00am in Paris.
Within a decade, Flip had traveled to all seven continents. He enjoyed getting to know new people and new cultures- and found that as different as we are around the world, we're really very much the same. Along the way, he realized that beer breaks down barriers, and helps people get to know one another. Flip had plenty of beer brotherhood moments- from Baltika in a Helsinki hallway, to Flag Especiale in a Morocco hotel bar, to Guinness that sparked a sing-along with a strange Swiss-American surgeon in Antarctica, to a fabulous local dark beer with a table full of people from five continents in Tierra del Fuego.

The Veg: He gave us the name.
|
The Veg is Flip's brother, and started the second Pax Brewitas chapter. Veg enjoys a very long and rewarding relationship with beer, beginning when he was six weeks old and his mom placed a beer-dipped fingertip in his mouth. She says he smiled when he tasted it. He remembers liking Busch he begged off his dad at age four. It wasn’t the best beer, but in the small town where the family lived, it didn’t get any better.
After high school, Veg ran off to Germany with the Army. This was fortuitous in the roots of Pax Brewitas' cause because The Veg discovered a wonderful world of beer in Germany, and found himself in an intermediate-range nuclear-missile unit. (The same missiles the U.S. kept pointed at the Soviets in the 1980s.) The Veg saw the missiles up close and shared much beer with the guys who might have fired them had the geopolitical shit hit the fan. He also shared much beer with some delightful European citizens.
After the Army The Veg went to college- and met people from across the country and around the world. He drank beer with many of them- including a student from the former Soviet Union. What if that student had become a target of one of those missiles? The Veg was happy that he got to drink with that student instead of vapourising him in a flash of thermonucular death.
The Veg continues to enjoy beer and the peace it brings with anybody who’ll join him. He does most of his drinking in the Dallas TexSux metro area.
